The Derry Girls walked the red carpet at Thursday night’s IFTA Gala Television Awards and said it was “so nice to all be back together again”.

The breakout Channel 4 comedy picked up two hotly-contested gongs on the night, beating off competition from The Young Offenders, Bridget & Eamon and Mrs Brown’s Boys to win Best Comedy, while the show’s creator and writer Lisa McGee also won the Best Writer Comedy/Soap award.

The cast were getting lots of attention as they arrived at the IFTAs ceremony at the RDS.

“It’s been so nice,” Leah O’Rourke, who plays Jenny, told RTÉ Entertainment. “Even walking here, people were snapping away and telling us congratulations, so we’re delighted with it!”

“It’s so nice all to be back together again,” Saoirse Monica Jackson, who was nominated for the Best Actress award for her portrayal of central character Erin, said. “It’s such an honour to be here and just celebrate all the great work that we have coming out of here. My fellow nominees are all absolutely brilliant so it’s great.”

The show, which follows the trials and tribulations of teenager Erin growing up in 1990s Northern Ireland, was commissioned for a second run after just one episode due to its instant popularity.

“We’re blown away, but it’s all in the writing,” Louisa Harland, who plays Orla, said. “It’s all Lisa McGee.”

The cast said they were in the dark about McGee’s ideas for the second season. “We can’t say anything!” Kathy Kiera Clarke, aka Aunt Sarah, said.

“She’s giving absolutely nothing away,” agreed Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, who plays the feisty Michelle. “So we’re going to wait until she has a few drinks and then we’re going to ask her again.”

O’Donnell added that they’re “up for anything”.

“Well there’s so many possibilities so we’re sort of up for anything, really. We trust Lisa completely, and Liz [Lewin, executive producer], so fingers crossed it goes really well.”

Many of the red carpet attendees were effusive in their praise of Derry Girls, with Jennifer Barry of The Young Offenders saying excitedly: “The Derry Girls hugged us when we walked in, it was crazy! I was like ‘I love you so much!'”

English actress Jorgie Porter is also a huge fan, saying: “Oh my God, Derry Girls is hilarious. I feel like they’re what we were as kids and when they talk about things you go, ‘That’s what we were saying!'”

Jennifer Aniston to be Courteney Cox’s maid of honour

Jennifer Aniston is reportedly set to take on maid of honour duties when Courteney Cox marries Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid.

The Friends co-stars have remained close friends over the years and Cox is said to have asked Aniston to take on the big role on her wedding day because she “wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle” with anyone else.

”Courteney and Jennifer are thick as thieves and they have got even closer in recent months,” the Sunday Mirror quotes a source as saying.

“Courteney wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle without Jennifer by her side. They have a very strong friendship.”

Cox and McDaid began dating in 2013, with an engagement following in 2014. They were introduced by their mutual friend Ed Sheeran, who Cox previously revealed will likely perform at the wedding.

“We are certainly grateful to Ed for introducing us. I can’t imagine him not playing something at the wedding. It’ll be a musical night,” she told The Sun.

The pair are set to tie the knot in McDaid’s home in Derry, before having a second ceremony in Malibu, California.

Game of Thrones scripts ‘self-destruct’ after filming

Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has said the need for secrecy around the final episodes of the hit drama has brought in new measures of security, with their scripts now self-destructing after the scenes have been filmed.

The actor, who plays Jaime Lannister on the HBO series and is one of the few remaining original cast members, said they now only receive digital copies of the scripts, and cannot keep them after filming completes.

“They’re very very strict. It’s reached a crazy level this year,” he told Elite Daily.

“We actually get the scripts, and then when we’ve shot the scene — and we only have it digitally — and then when you’ve done the scene, it just vanishes. It’s like Mission: Impossible. ‘This will self-destruct’.”

Over the last seven seasons many plot points have been leaked, with some whole episodes even being uploaded online ahead of the official airdates, so it’s no wonder they are going all out in the security stakes for the final six episodes.

Game of Thrones: Season 7’s Biggest Moments

At the moment many cast members, including Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), are in Belfast working on season eight.

Solo: A Star Wars Story star Clarke recently told RTÉ Entertainment what she will miss most about filming in Belfast.

The Queen of Dragons star said she will miss “Guinness, absolutely, good Guinness.”

Clarke admitted that coming to the end of Game of Thrones feels “really bittersweet” having been on the show since it first aired in 2011.

“The way I keep describing it is it’s just like leaving home, because you’re excited about what you’re going to do next but you’re incredibly sad to be leaving everything you experienced behind,” she told RTÉ Entertainment.

“It’s definitely going to be a real tearjerker.”

Game of Thrones is set to return in 2019.

Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt on Corrie, was named Best Actress and also won the award for Best Female Dramatic Performance for her involvement in the show’s grooming storyline.

Bringing Corrie’s haul to a total of six, the soap was also the recipient of the Tony Warren Award for special achievement behind the scenes, with their former executive producer Keiron Roberts honoured for his work.

Hollyoaks collected four prizes on the night, including best male dramatic performance for Ross Adams category and the best storyline for Lily’s self harm.

Adams told the crowd: “Oh my word, this is really, really unbelievable. I think Hollyoaks does issue-based storylines really well, and I’m hugely proud of them for telling this story as well as they did.

“I love soap, I love all of the soaps. Years ago when I sat working as a PA to the producer of Coronation Street, I never thought I’d be stood here collecting an award and this is just the icing on the cake.”

EastEnders’ Jake Wood, who plays Max Branning, had his sole win in the scene of the year category where the prize was split for the first time in British Soap Award history.

Taking to the stage, Wood sent a special message to his former co-star, Barbara Windsor, whose husband Scott recently revealed that she has been living with Alzheimer’s since April 2014.

He said: “Can I send a big EastEnders’ hug out to Barbara Windsor and her husband Scott. I speak for everyone here when I say we love you very much.”

EastEnders shared the best scene prize with fellow BBC soap Doctors who had been nominated for their Bollywood proposal scene.

Emmerdale – the big winner last year – picked up two awards including the one-off greatest moment in soap history prize for their 2016 scene, the Hotten by-pass crash.

Meanwhile EastEnders star Rudolph Walker, 78, who has portrayed Patrick Trueman since 2001, was handed the outstanding achievement award while the BBC soap’s Lorraine Stanley, who plays Karen Taylor, won the best newcomer award.

Doctors actor Ian Midlane won the best comedy performance prize for his role of Dr Al Haskey.
